The principles of fracture repair.

When a normally healthy bone is fractured via a traumatic injury or during a surgery to correct a malformation or other orthopedic/joint disease, several steps must take place in order for the bone to heal.

1. Callus Formation
2. Callus Vascularization
3. Ossification if the callus
4. Callus reorganization

Each of these steps is as essential as the others and without occurring in this specific order the fracture will not heal properly. The practice of fracture repair has evolved over the years from pins and wires to external devices to plating and all combinations of the above. The simple principle is to stabilize the fractured ends of the bone as close to each other as possible in order for these steps to occur. At Broadway Veterinary Hospital we are currently employing the most current and cutting edge technology in fracture repair, locking screws and plates.

This technology allows Dr. Everett and the team here at Broadway Veterinary Hospital repair almost any traumatic fracture of any long bone in your animal's body; including but not limited to the femur, humerus, radius, ulna, tibia, fibula, and portions of the pelvis. As this technology continues to expand we will be able to offer additional treatments for joint diseases including but not limited to Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia, and angular limb deformities.

Please do not hesitate to ask the staff here at Broadway Veterinary Hospital about the principles of fracture repair, joint disease, or any other orthopedic questions you may have!
